Hi everyone,
This looks like such a great forum. I have been reading and reading and learning so much and I hate to sign up with a problem, but ...
My sweet cow who has never kicked me a day in her life has a very hot udder which is clearly sore and tender, so she spent a lot of time kicking during today's milking.
I can live with the kicking as I know it's just because of her discomfort, but I am concerned about her udder and what I ought do.
I didn't milk her this last week as I needed a health break, so left her calf on her the whole week. He is usually with her during the day and separated at night so I didn't expect there to be any problems, there hasn't been in the past.
So I'm not sure what's up. I'm wondering whether he has been too rough with her and grazed her teats. But would this cause a hot and sensitive udder? There did not seem to be any issue with the little milk I got from her today. There was no stringyness or lumpy bits and it tasted sweet as normal, although hot. Could it be mastitis? Would mastitis cause her udder to be sensitive to the touch?
I'm not sure what to do now. If she has cut teats I ought keep her calf away and hand milk her until she's healed, right? But if she has mastitis, her calf will do better with her than I will, perhaps under supervision.
I don't really think she has mastitis, I think it's probably the calf and his unrestrained access, but the heat of her udder is bothering me.
Can anyone suggest a course of action for me to take? Your advice would be most appreciated.
Beth.
