I told my sister that I would post what was going on with her cow on here and see if any of ya'll have any suggestions for her. Here's the back ground. This is an experienced nurse cow, not sure of her age (forgot to ask Sis).
She is a Jersey. She had her calf on 5-10. Sis left her alone on 5-11. She checked on her 5-12 in the pm when she tried to give her 3 adopted babies purchased from dairies. Her bag was full at that time. By 5-13 she noticed that the front right quarter was overly full, and when she tried to milk it out, she only got about 3 squirts of clear liquid. The vet said that the clear liquid meant it was an E-coli infection. That evening she started giving her 40 cc of penicillin per the vet's instructions. On 5-14 she gave her 1 tube of Today for lactating cows in the teat. She gave her 40 cc pennicilin on 5-14, 15, 16, and 17 in the am. She called a dairy and was told by the dairyman that since the bag was not blue, black, hot, or painful, that the antibiotic had done all it was going to do. He told her just to milk it out, but nothing will come out. Only about 3 squirts at a time. She put hot towels on it and tried again and only got a couple of more squirts. This front right quarter is large and hard and it seems to be starting to affect the rear quarter on that side. The rear quarter seems to be getting hard too.
The cow is polite to Sis even tho she knows that she is going to get a shot. She doesn't act sick and is eating and drinking fine. She still comes to Sis from across the pasture even tho like I said she knows it is going to result in a shot. She is standing for the calves to nurse just fine. (By the way, there is another Jersey helping feed the adopted babies, so they aren't doing without.)
Does any one have any advice for her? I am going to be gone all day today, but will check back this evening for any replies. Thank you in advance.
