I have been collecting my milking machine components for awhile and am finally ready to give it a try. My plan is to set the bucket beside the stanchion, instead of under the cow. I have plenty of tubing (I know the inflations in the pic are the black hoses that came with the surge lid, but I have much longer tubing so I will be able to set the bucket outside of the stanchion).
I am posting pics of everything I have.
I have some questions.
1) Do I need a balance tank? I have a vacuum and was told if I use the surge bucket, because it is so much larger than the amount of milk I will get, that the empty space in the bucket will serve as the balance tank. (My cow gives about 1/2 gallon at a time, the bucket holds about 3-4 gallons). The vacuum is a Welch 2585-b, 7.1 cfi and pulls 26" mercury.
If I do need a balance tank, what size, what type etc? Where can I find one?
2) I don't have a pressure regulator exactly. I have a pressure gage, and a brass pressure regulator that regulates by turning a nut. Is there any problem with using this type of regulator? It was much less expensive than a pressure regulator combined with the gage. We have tried it with the inflations on our fingers and we seem to be able to keep it at 13" mercury with no problem. Please see pic.
3) I have a 2 gallon milk can and the surge bucket lid seems to fit it. Can I use the milk can instead of the surge bucket? My reason for this is the milk can is easier to clean, and is much lighter. Please see pic.
I don't have a pic of it, but I have a inline vacuum shut off for the vacuum hose.
I am not sure what else to ask, if I am missing something please let me know. I have never even seen one of these in operation and am just going by what I could find on the net. I am a little nervous to put in on my cow, I really don't want to hurt her and am afraid of doing something wrong.
