We banded Humperdink today with the callicrate bander. The video didn't come out well (put the kid in charge) so I am not posting it.
So Humpy is an almost two year old angus bull. A little over 1,000 lbs according to the tape today. We locked him in a head gate, tied one of his legs back so he was standing on 3 legs. Had trouble accessing him from the back side. His position was a little skew and he's a little knock kneed back there. So we did it from the side. The band fit fine. My DH just held the sack and flipped the bander over it. Friend checked to make sure both testicles were in. Humpy at this point is standing still. Start to tighten the bander, just when we were almost done he started a kickin, DH let go of the bander so not to get kicked, Humpy then goes down in a heap. We loosened his leg to get him back up but he wanted nothing to do with that. So he was quiet, my DH was able to crimp and cut to remove the bander while he was down on his side. We removed the rope, undid the head gate and he popped up like nothing ever happened and went to eat some hay with a few of the others. We are keeping him in the barn for awhile so we can keep an eye on him, but we watched him for about 1/2 hour after and he didn't appear to be in any pain. My neighbor will bring him back to our place next week so we can start fattening him up for the freezer.
So, you can definitely use it on a mature bull. I think that final tightening down that probably shuts off the vessels and cord causes some pain but then it is over and it didn't seem to bother him at all. I would like to try the California bander some time but this is easy to use. The key is to hold the band correctly in your hand while holding the scrotum and flip the bander up over.
If we can get the video usable, will try to post it. We used the camera and the kid did it and it was dark. Will update later when the sack falls off. Meanwhile the one we did last week is doing fine, no issues.
