We have an Angus cow we had listed for sale. We had a guy contact us and said he would buy her if we had her preg checked first. Well if your gonna do one then why not do them all. So we called the vet couldnt get us in till thursday. The guy buying the cow said he knew someone. Well we got all the girls rounded up, and the preg check guy showed up. I thought he was going to be some old cattle guy that would just guess. Turns out its a really nice professional AI guy. He was very reasonable, and seemed so knowlegeable. We had 6 cows checked. These were the results.
*Mimsy Jersey 5 years old rescued off the meat truck last February. She came back 5 1/2 months bred she is bred to the mini Jersey bull.
*Aggie Guernsey Jersey x she was supposed to be about 6 months bred according to the guy we bought her from. We had her checked today she is about 5 months along she is bred to a brown swiss bull.
* Bessie/ formerly known as Terra, Reg 43" jersey. This is the heifer we bought from Suzorse. She came back as 41/2 months bred which means she got pregnant like the week we brought her home. I thought she would only be 2-3 months along Bred to our bull Pee Wee.
*Mater Jersey holstein x BIG girl. first calf heifer I thought she was due any time come to find out she is only about 5 months along. She was my first bottle heifer and has turned out really well. She was with the beef herd so is bred to our Angus bull. I was hoping she was already bred to the jers. when we turned her out but evidently not.
*The cow we sold was pregnant too. So she is gone one less mouth to feed this winter.
*The last one was a twin to a bull calf we got from the dairy, she came back as a freemartin. So no big surprises there just wanted to give her a chance. We are planning to sell her for meat.
So instead of being spred out like I thought all the girls are due within a month of each other. February the craziness begins. We will have 5 cows in milk. My husband thinks we should just start a dairy.
We pulled hairs on the girls we had checked today to send in for A2 tests. We use UC davis in CA. Very very easy to do. We will find out in a few weeks where we stand as far as that goes. We sent in hairs on our cow Nessy that we are milking last week, we should know in a few more days her A2 status. I am particularly wondering about our Guernsey cross girl.
And the best part of the day is I found a really nice AI guy. MY cow Nessy came in to heat yesterday, and I just got through telling my husband I want to AI her to a really nice mini Bull. So now I just need to figure out which bull I want to use. The AI guy was great and only charges $40 to come out which is really reasonable. Off to figure out which bull I would like to use. Any one know of a Nice A2 mini Jersey bull?
