I feel a bit silly asking this question, but despite 3 helpful friends who have cow-smarts and have come out to see our cow, we can't figure out what's going on with her. I've still got a lot to learn.
We thought she was bred in December. We had a bull out here for several weeks, at least enough for two cycles. I tihnk about a month and a half or two. We had her preg-checked a few months later and it was positive. I saw the bull do his business and marked the date- Dec 9th. I figured that's when she took. But when she didn't calve on time (Sept 15), I started to wonder about if she went in heat a second time and I missed it. That would have put her due today, rather than 3 weeks ago. She's part mini-jersey and bred to lowline angus so we thought that calf would come early. I don't know her history for calving early or late.
Two friends of mine with family cow experience came and took a look at her. She is half dexter so she's thicker than most cows they've had. They tried bumping the calf without luck, but both thought she looked bred.
Well tonight we put her in the stantion to check her out and her vulva was looking swollen and slimy so we were thinking good thoughts. Her bag still looks fairly soft, and it's hard to tell for sure if there is any change there. Then we turned her out in the pasture and she tried mounting the heifer. Then the heifer tried mounting her. So now I have no idea what to think. She's just going into heat?!? I read online that estrogen levels spike prior to calving and it can cause a false heat.
Can anyone help?? If she is going into heat I want her bred, for crying out loud! I plan call the AI tech first thing tomorrow and have him come out, palpate, and if he says no dice breed her. If he says she's bred I will be happy enough to pay him $30 for just coming out!
This is no fun!
