For many on the KFC forum , including myself, it's been a crappy month.
My Lucy had her calf, dropped a stomach, ruptured her gut and died. I lost her bull calf about 3 days later. That was a couple of weeks ago. Bad luck runs in 3's. I've been on pins and needles. We have a couger in the area along with a new pack of coyotes. Extra lighting, extra patrols at night, and extra dogs left outside after dark to guard every one. But it didn't help. 2 nights ago, about 3 am, some thing spooked the milk cows and 1400lbs of scared silly holstien, tripped and fell full onto her 2 week old, absolutly beautiful, heifer calf and smashed her FLAT. Loosing the calf has been hard, but the worst has been Tillys grief over it. Listening to her is as if some one is slowly pulling your heart out. Poor girl is doing better today, but the last couple have been difficult for her.
So......I think every one could use some laughter and smiles.
I had the vet out today and if cows could talk this is what mine were saying.
First...Pixie got her preg. check. If you remember this is the heifer we got from posspix. She is 5+ months bred!
She is standing in the staunchion, hoping for grain, but we were in a hurry and there was still some hay so I didn't worry. The vet did his business.
Pixie whipped her head around and said " To heck with the scoop of grain, for that I should have gotten a WHOLE Bucket!"
Next were the bangs vaccs. Sophi is such a brave and trusting girl. Stood there happily being scratched. Then the shot.....Mom, help that big man just stung me! After that, she wasn't so docile anymore. Tatoo and clip were not fun to say the least.
Last but not least is the atached picture that I just couldn't resist. He was one of my bull calves, he's now one of my almost, steers.
" Wow, first she comes at me with a shiny tool and put a rubber band where I'm sure one doesn't belong. Hmmm, then she tells me what a good boy I am, scratches my head, and it starts to burn like it's on FIRE! I think mom has lost it, do YOU think she can see me in here?"
It doesn't make the bad go away, but maybe makes it a little more bearable to be able to smile for a moment.
Thanks for letting me ramble and share.
