so .. I finally got all signed up for FTCLDF. They are working on my contract.
I wanted to ask a few questions.. this is geared MOSTLY to Michigan people, but please I need everyones opinion.
For a cow share program what testing do you recommend.
TB really is NOT an issue anymore in the state. We don't even need to test for fairs anymore, tho most people do not know this.
I am unable to find recent Bovine brucellosis cases in Michigan.
Johnes, while devistating to a large herd as well as a single cow owner, the testing has only proven to be at best, 50% accurate, in cows KNOWN to be infected with the disease.
I was also told that i need to have pathogenic testing on the milk. I certainly dont have a problems with this, as long as its reasonable testing.. however he didnt clarify really. I am assuming testing for salmonella, and ecoli would be 2.
also testing for stomatic cell count.
How often do you do the paghogenic testing and the stomatic cell count. I would assume the cell count get done when there is suspected mastitis.
Does anyone know where this testing is done in Michigan. I used to take the goat milk when we were milk testing to the MSU DHIA office. but for some reason I cannot seem to locate online. I m only about 15 miles from MSU so it is very convienant to go there.
so if you guys can share it would be great.
The prices we came to on the shares are $50 to buy the share, and $22 a month board. I am seeing that this testing is going to get costly.
Please, dont miss understand, I dont have a problem doing testing if it really IS necessary, but just doing testing for the sake of testing, in my opinion is no different than dr.s giving antiobiotics because they dont KNOW what is wrong is wrong when you see them.
thanks for the opinions in advance
