hi guys,
I have a cow who got her halter partway off, it is hanging around her neck right now. I can't get her to let me get it off, let alone back on. what do I do?
here's the story of how we got it on her in the first place. while she was eating her treats, we got a rope around her horns, and tied her to one of the large corner fence posts. (she's flighty and a bit aggressive) she freaked out and almost tore the fence apart. then we decided that she would need a second rope to keep her still enough to work with, and got a second rope on her horns and tied it to the adjacent post. also one of the big ones. there is a brace between the two we thought would help keep her from coming over/through the fence and hurting herself. since we couldn't get the rope off her or get the halter on her at this point. she went crazy again, and got herself stuck in the fence and pulled the brace OFF the posts, loosened the first post to the point that it may come out of the ground, and stabbed herself with the end of the wire in the nose, ear and horn base.
Finally, we had to thump her on the head to get her to stop hurting herself, and we got the halter on and the ropes off. the fence is still in need of repair, I don't know how to do it, and the guy who put it up for me is unavailable for a while. now I went out there and she shy's away if I come near her at all, even with treats, and the halter is hanging where she could catch it on her feet, or the fence and really hurt herself. I don't have any sort of shoot or stanchion, just the fence which is now broken.
what do I do. DH is out of town again/still so it's just me and the kids.
DH is suggesting I find a way to drug her and then I can get it off and back on right while she's knocked out. Or butcher her.
