It seems to me we all deal we all deal with this at one time or another, so I thought we should gather a compilation of treatments in one thread, maybe for the TOK. This might have been done already, idk.
My cow had what seemed mastitis,
lump in the right front quarter, sore ( but only once, compared to the 3 weeks dealing with it) and small lumps in the milk. The milk tasted fine though. I took about a quarter cup of cayenne mixed it into 3 cups of olive oil ( any ratio would do) actually the olive oil was a healing oil I make that has lots of healing herbs in it including comfrey, but in the absence of something like that plain olive oil would be fine. I put it in a glass oven proof dish in the oven for 48 hours at a temp of 130 degrees. The cayenne infuses strongly into the oil. I then strain it to get out the grit and I am left with a nice red orange oil. I took this to the barn and after every milking I would first rub on the quarter a few drops of peppermint oil then this cayenne oil. The udder soaks up that oil so fast and the massaging is very important! Giving that quarter a nice long rub does amazing things to clear up problems. Only if I got lazy would I see any of the previous symptoms. I think the laziness was my only factor in the longevity of my situation. When I would go to milking I would also take a bucket ( maybe a half gallon worth) of very hot water, so hot I could just touch it. By the time I would get set up for milking I could grab the rag from the water. I then very carefully would apply this to the quarter and hold it there. I would repeat this until the water was no longer hot and moving onto warm. Then I would milk and then do the oil treatment.
Just my procedure that I have seen great results with. It is also good bonding time and it smells good with all the nice oils. I think my cow really liked these treatments too. She always relaxed so nicely and her letdown would be fast and smooth with this treatment.
1. hot compress done with plain water or herbs like comfrey infused in it.
2. massage gently while holding the hot cloth on the udder and repeat until water is warm and not hot.
3. milk the cow
4. rub a good amount of peppermint oil into the affected quarter
5. apply and massage deeply and thoroughly a cayenne infused oil ( of your choice) into the affected quarter.
6. and relax this shall pass too:)
