We bought a 6 mo old red angus calf yesterday. He was a bucket calf in the fair at the end of August for the family we bought him from. About a week and a half before we were first going to buy him, they said he was sick and they wanted to treat him first. Probably pneumonia, treated with 1 injection of LA 200. He improved and looked good by the time we went to get him yesterday. He was up and perky, eyes looked good. We brought him home, a 30 minute drive in the back of our pickup with a shell, windows open. He got out and romped a bit with our other calf in the pasture. He still had a bit of a heaving cough that I hadn't noticed before. So we gave him a dose of LA 200. About 2 hours later he was in distress. Labored breathing, frothing at the mouth, standing like a statue. Temp was 107. We immediately got him cooled off with the hose, took him into a stall in the barn, put an ice pack on his back while I went to the vet and got him some pain killer (Banamine?) 2 hours later his temp was normal, he was eating well, moving around and responding to touch, flies and the like. He drank water, but not as much as I had hoped he would. He did well until the 24 hour mark after the pain meds. His temp rose to nearly 105 again. Earlier in the day, we had armed ourselves for the weekend with a heavy duty antibiotic (Draxxin?) and another dose of pain meds. We gave him the antibiotic before noon today. But, by this afternoon his fever is back. We gave him the pain meds about an hour ago. His fever has dropped about 1 degree, but persists. He continues to eat and drink, pee and poop. No runs, yet. I don't know what is wrong. Tomorrow is Sunday, vet is closed.
What do ya'll think? Anything else I can do?
Thanks so much!
Sincerely,
Dona
