Sally's driving us nuts. We've been tracking her heats for the last 6 months (yes, she's been open for some time now, mainly due to our ignorance). Our intention was to AI her this summer for a early to mid Spring calf. I even put together a spreadsheet with her signs and the dates. Here's a general pattern that I saw:
1st day: reduced milking, gives about 1 cup!
2nd day: agitated, dances in stanchion, trumpet moos, mounts steer and on two occaisions, tried mounting me (very scary), occaisionally has clear, stringy mucus
4th day: blood on tail
As you may have noticed, we've never actually observed her standing for her steer.
So, we finally hooked up with an AI tech that would come all the way out here, and so when Sally went into heat five weeks ago, we paid close attention to her signs so we could inform the AI lady. She had the signs of heat for a few days (mooing like Coltrane, VERY low milk output, agitated, dancing in the stanchion, mounting her steer, tried mounting me, etc.). But we never actually saw her stand for him; he sure was interested back there though, smelling, rubbing, and when he tried mounting her, she'd scoot away. Then after several hours of this, she'd start mounting him again. We called the AI lady and she came out that afternoon and AI'd her. She said some cows mount after they come out of standing heat. She followed up with a bloody tail, 2 days later.
It didn't take because she went into heat two weeks ago, followed up by the bloody tail, 2 days later.
So, with those heat signs and the pattern I've given, can you tell me when you think she'd be in standing heat? Is there some kind of general timeframe prior to bleeding, maybe? Or is it true what the AI tech said, that some cows start mounting again after the standing heat?
We're getting later and later into our breeding window, and I'd really like to get her bred back (her first steer is 15 months old!).
