I have 5 cows. I've been using Naylor's mastitis indicators to determine the status of my Jersey's udders. Everything has seemed fine for months and then the milk poured slowly through the strainer. Again, no signs of mastitis either in the milk or on the card! A few days later, there was some visible clotting in the milk of one cow. Obviously, I no longer have any trust in the indicators. I decided to treat her with today antibiotics because there was no way of telling if she was free from the infection. In the meanwhile, I believe I passed the infection onto another cow by using the same claw from the milking machine. So, both the cows have been treated with the 2 infusions (last infusion Wednesday, today is Friday). I believe the first cow cleared up, but now the second cow even registers on the Naylor's card test as positive! Then, the other 3 cows had milk that would strain slowly. I am very frustrated and concerned.
A friend had the C.M.T. test, and I tried to test all the cows, without fully understanding how to read the results. One or two of the other cows seems to have a positive result. I am about ready to infuse all the infected quarters and hope for the best! (although the one doesn't seem to be getting better) It takes quite a while to milk all the cows and I have to say I am not totally confident that it will work to just do an extra milking... will it? I'm not sure I have the patience if it doesn't. Please help me in a direction that might help. I do have customers and need to know where to begin. Should I be concerned for milk that has been taken? What if the today antibiotics doesn't cure the 2nd cow?
Need Help,
Billy
