Hi,
So im in 4-h and i got this heifer that was nice and quite. Well as soon as i actually started working with her she turned into a completley different animal and i just dont know what to do with her anymore!!!
The last fair we went to with her she had an attidude and she was walking and then she just bolted back and before i know it shes running the feilds outside the fair... took about an hour to catch. Ever since that shes been really bad to work with. We were walking with her in the laneway and she bolted backwards again and then leaped forward and went through the barbwire fence. We can never catch her in the feild, but she always ends up taking down the electric fence and we have to run her to the barn. Its almost sometimes in possiable to hold onto her, she does this thing where when she bolts back she twists and turns so its just rips your hand, i have multiple blisters and rope burns. Ive held onto her a couple times, but im just sick of it! How do i get her to walk properly?! Its seems like nothing we do helps, we've tried hitting her nose with this stick thing and that worked until she got more hyper, we tried having to people at her butt so she couldnt bolt backwards, but she ended up bolting forward and putting my friend on the ground... and we have tried putting two halters on her and having a lead come from each side of her head but again she twists and turns and gets us all tangled, and obviously we cant do that in the show ring... we also dont like to use the tractor to pull her because one time we were doing that to train the calves and the human sociaty stopped us :/. Its not a scared sort of thing, cause there will be no movement or nothing around us,shes just calm then all of a sudden she freaks...and when she gets away she just walks a couple meters and stand there. its pathedic!!. so any, any, any!, suggestions? on catching her? and her awful bolting problem.
also how can i get her to trust me? like when we feed her everone else starts eating and she waits till we are on the other side before she moves...and i can never get close to her just to pet her, and i try to give her treats put i cant cause she doesnt seem to like to when shes on the halter and the other heifers will eat it if i just leave it? any good treat suggestions?
Please help. im sick of this.
edit: a lot of answers are for like halter breaking calves and that, well shes not a calf, she is a yearling heifer. born march 3 2009.... so she was shown all last year and she was a quiet calf. She is almost a bit better at shows then she is working with her at home. Its just when she sees oppen area to run through thats when she bolts.
