Hi y'all,
Let me give you Moonshines history here real quick. She is brown swiss, 3, calved last Nov., and open right now.
Tuesday night, I noticed she had scours, figured it was from the green grass that is popping up the last week.
Wednesday night she went off her grain, Thursday morning she was grunting and sounded in pain...checked her rumen, felt hard, couldnt feel it turning, had the vet out-he was thinking hardware disease (checked for magnet-I didnt realize she was never given one!)-he tubed her with a gallon of mineral oil and white stuff (sorry cant remember the name)-Ive had her on probiotics/pink pills since she went off her grain. She is eating alfalfa, but I havent returned to grain. Gave her excenel, a magnet , and some activated charcoal to soak up toxins.
She seemed better yesterday, watery stools-to be expected-but not grunting-and milk production going back up a little (from 40lbs a day norm, down to 10 lbs, and inching up a little from there-13 lbs this morning).
This morning dh checked her side, was softer. Tonight though, she is back to grunting-and her rumen side is hard again. Dh tubed her with mineral oil-dont know if that is the right thing to do-I will put a call into the vet, but dont know if Ill hear back from him till Monday. Been keeping her on the probiotics.
What should we do from this point? Is there anything else?
How long should we let this go on before we consider surgery to remove this possible mass?
I feel so bad for her, she is so sweet, our gentle giant. Any help sure would be appriciated! I sure dont want to loose her if we should act here.
Mary
Edit-talked to the doc on call, boohoo-its the horse doc-not the one we usually use (and we looked so hard to find a good cow vet!!)-he doesnt have a clue on what to do--so Im going to rely on you guys
