OK, so I have an addiction...that's the first step to recovery, right?!?
Here's a girl we're thinking about buying. Got lots of pics and questions.
Before I get to the pics...she's a heavily bred 5-6 yr old Jersey "midi" (woman said the previous owner called her that -- apparently that's a mini/standard Jersey cross?). The woman bought her and a few others from someone in February with the intention of raising bottle calves and supplying her family with milk. Didn't work out, she's selling all the cows and keeping the calves. Too much for her. No history of vaccinations or testing, so I'd have to get a vet out there to test (and confirm preg/estimate date). She was fairly calm when we went to see her. She let us scratch her and touch her bag. No history of mastitis or calving problems.
Here are the pics. She is shorter than a normal sized Jersey. I'd say her back comes up to my waist.
Question 1: Does her stomach look really low to you (or is it because she's shorter than normal)? She freshened in November 2009 and was running with a Jersey bull up until the time her current owner bought her in February 2010. Supposedly, she was confirmed 60 days bred in February. That means she came into heat and got nailed rather quickly after calving, assuming her dates and numbers are right!
Question 2: Here are some pics of her back side. She's got really huge teats, except for one, and that quarter is deflated (you can see in the pic) As of 1 week ago, "Nanny" was nusing two calves, but now she separated them and is drying her up. The current owner did milk her both by hand and machine. She said the quarter that is deflated is just dried up because the calves didn't like nursing on it. It was OK while she milked her earlier this year, and in fact, she said she was an extremely easier milker. Should I be suspicious?
The deflated quarter and small teat is the rear left, of course. The teat is just left of the brown smudge (sorry, picture's not so good).
Question 3: Here are some pics of her feet -- do they look funny to you?
Question 4: There's a small wart or mole on one of the teats, about the size of a small pea. Will this be a problem?
Question 5: The million dollar question, Would you buy her, and what would you pay? She's asking $1200. We're in SW Missouri, and I think that's a bit too high for a cow with no documented history, not registered, and 6 yrs old.
So, there you have it.
