I was never able to sell our Maggie cow, so I took the plunge! Not a very successful plunge at all. I milked her twice and turned her back out with her three calves again. They are 4 months old. The first day I was able to milk a gallon but it took so long and I wasn't able to milk her out completely. The second day I got 3/4 of a gallon before I quit. She is three quartered. The front teat is perfect sized. Of course the other front teat is blind/blind quarter, so it's out. The rear teats are short, short, short! Only two fingers! I milk goats everyday and they are so much easier for me!
I have to leave town in mid-August and don't know how long I will be gone (visiting sister) and no one else will milk for me, so I won't attempt to get her on a solid routine until I return. I wished I could get another calf for her and wean these big boys! They are cutting her teats and lifting her off of the ground when they nurse!
Question: Since she is only two and this is her first freshening will her teats ever get bigger? Goats sometimes start out with smaller teats but after a little while they become larger.
Second question: Maggie's poop splatters! Before spring grass came it was a good consistency...cow pie but firmed up. Since spring grass came in, it splatters at least six feet out! EVERYWHERE! Is this normal or does she have something wrong with her? I call it coleslaw!
Another question: It is hot here and she isn't the most sociable animal so handling her does cause a little stress but she pants and drools and sometimes gags while she eats! Normal?
My husband and I think she has some kind of disease or malady!
