So this spring my husband got a call and was asked to get rid of some horses for a guy that were really old and couldnt keep weight. Well he picked them up and they were RAIL thin I mean no meat on their bones at all. Well it was just in time for spring grass so he thought we could just turn them out and see what happens (he has a big heart for horses). It wouldnt cost us anything to just let them graze for the year. Well three months after we turned them out the had both gained probably 500lbs no kidding. We found a good home for the younger one he was broke to the gills sound and just needed a little feed. He was only about 20 and man was he pretty after being on that grass. Well we still have the one that was a bit older he is an arabian, and naturally a leaner breed then the other (QH) was. Any ways I have a point... the one we decided to keep is a fantastic kids horse, and he has a home until the day he dies now. But all though he has gained 500lbs. It all seems to be in his belly his butt and neck are thicker now but I would like to see this horse carry his weight better. We did just worm him and plan to do it again in about 2 weeks. We have an appointment to get his teeth floated but they really dont seem bad as he has been gaining like crazy. His tail head is still boney, and his neck is still a little thinner then I would like to see it. This Guy has beautiful movement and you can tell in his hay day he was a beautiful horse. We gave him to my son and he is sooo gentle and sweet with him he has to crawl all over him to get on his back and this guy is just so sweet with him. He totally deserves a good home. Oh and the other thing is he has what looks like fungus right above his hoof and goes behind his foot above his hoof. We sprayed some scarlett oil on it. But he itches it alot so wondering if we should be doing something different there. All though we have always had lots of horses this guy is our first OLD horse.
