Hey, hope everyone is doing good. I have a question about preg checking cows (Or heifers) in this instance.
Sara, (our farm helper/A.I. tech in training) AI'd Our jersey heifer, April about 4 months ago. I watched for any repeat signs of a heat, but didn't see any thing much.
Sara wanted to check her about a month ago, but I wanted to wait awhile and let her get a little farther along before we did it. I figured we'd be pretty safe doing it now, so I gave Sara the green light to do the exam.
I led April into our chute/stall just like when we AI'd her. Now the funny part was, when Sara started pulling the Sleeve/glove on it made the kinda crinkling plastic noise and April freaked out and started moving from side to side, and back and forth in the stall. I tried to kinda steady her in one place as Sara began inserting her arm in her, but it wasn't to easy. Once she got her arm in a ways, she did quiet down some. So my first question is, do cows remember noises particularly the sound the sleeve/glove make while being put on? The thing was too, that when Sara AI'd her the first time she didn't use any lube so April may of remembered that as being kind of a painful process possibly??? (she has since learned how wonderful lube is, for the cow and making her job easier too LOL) Another thing I thought maybe that if a cow isn't in heat, they probably dont stand as good (not standing heat)??
My second question is, about how long does an average preg exam take. Sara took her time and seemed to be very gentle. I actually think more so than our vet who seemed pretty rough on cows the couple times I watched. It did seem to take quite a while, but she is new to it. She did do it in school last spring, so she does know what she's doing. Anyway, Sara did confirm, we have a baby on the way!!!! So, Sara has her first confirmed pregnancy under her belt. She has bred a few since too that we'll preg check after a while.
Looking forward to any advice or insights as I am learning as we go too, and hope to do all the repro. work myself too one day.
Thanks in advance,
Jenna
