I think we have this problem on the mend, but wanted to see what others thought of it.
We have a Jersey calf who was born June 9th. For the first week and a half of his life, he acted like a deer fawn. His mom would leave him in the shade at the edge of the woods and go about her business (grazing, coming in for milking, etc.) only going to feed him every so often throughout the day. He seemed perfectly fine with the situation. When his mom started holding up milk for him, we decided to pull him and bottle feed.
His little bottom was bald thanks to his mom's constant licking. He seemed to have scabs on his ears too, which we blamed on fly bites. Over the next few days the "scabs" spread all over his body, and the hair started falling out. It wasn't in normal "ringworm" formations. It was pretty much solid patches of scabby skin under his hair all over his body. We had the vet out, and she was baffled. She did a skin scraping that came back negative for mites/mange. She looked and looked for lice and couldn't find any. We checked all the other animals for similar legions and found nothing.
She gave him antifungal shampoo, a shot of ivermectin, and a round of antibiotics just to cover all the bases. All the scabs are now gone, and his skin is soft and healthy looking. I noticed some new hair growth on his little bald tail while bathing him today, so he seems to be recovering. Through it all he has acted perfectly healthy, bouncy and has a great appetite. Now he just has a bald face and behind, and little bald patches all over his body. He earned the name 'Baldwin' since we kept referring to him as the "bald one".
Has anyone experienced anything like this before? I didn't take any pictures while he was bad, but could take one of the bald spots now if it would help.
