Sonia is 6 1/2 months into lactation. I don't remember the last time I did the CMT on her. I am rather lazy about it. If the milk strains funny, then I go for the CMT kit. so with this said...up until
last week I was milking TAD. Strained through 2 butter cloth or 1 cheese cloth..depending on what I grab. Has strained fast with NO issues or red flags. Taste great too. and still does
so..I transitioned her to OAD by only milking her 1/2 way in the PM milking for a few nights and then went to OAD in the AM. Tuesday night was the first night I skipped the PM milking. Understandably, Wednesday AM she was engorged and dripping but milked out fine, strained fine and tasted fine etc.
Yesterday morning (keep in mind first warm morning in a long time..grasping at straws here to help calm me down) when I strained I saw two small yellowish pieces...not flacky or cottage cheese like but just tiny spots. I am now in panic mode that I have a crisis on my hands. Mostly due to the history of my older cow who is positive for StaphA...this is Hailey. Hailey has never had contact of any kind with Sonia. Hailey has been dried off since Sept of 09. Sonia has her own milker that has never been on another cow
Any way, this morning I pulled out the CMT and did the test. When I first put the solution into the milk it had a quick light brown color but then quickly went to light purple and swirled it. all quarters looked the same. It didn't look like Hailey's ever did but the initial color change had me almost in tears. all four swirled the same. I can't say they were crystal clear and bright purple.
They didn't clot or slim up. although as time went on, it appeared to get thicker...this is a minute plus which I know only the initial reading is what matters.
So..again I am rambling. COULD her SCC be elevated because the transition to OAD.
I am hoping...PRAYING that this isn't anything and the two small things I saw were cream globules due to the warmer morning.
Either way, I am sending of samples Monday AM to the lab. but till then, any words of wisdom or thoughts would be appreciated...shoot straight from the hip please. thank you,
Heather
