Hi folks,
I am battling the scours in two bottle calves.
Aggie is the worst. She definitely has white watery scours mixed with some strings of blood. She happens to be on the nurse cow and has access to the cow 24 hrs a day. She drinks a little water but does not sample creep yet. She will get up and nurse but is weak in the rear end and tires easily. She is about 50 pounds and probably between 7-10 days old. The vet gave us Spectinomycin liquid to give twice a day and he wants us to keep up a rotation of Resflor to ward off potential pneumonia. We also have electrolyte products and I have her drink some electrolyte solution from the bottle between nursings. And I have given her Probios.
Bootsie is on the bottle, weighs about 80 pounds, and is about 10-14 days old. Bootsie had just one episode of scours this morning, just a very runny yellow, the consistency of nectar. I fear we will see more. Bootsie is in a stall in the (show-horse) barn. We put her on Spectinomycin also, and the Resflor. She did take her bottle today and nibble at her creep after the Resflor shot. I took that as a really good sign. She has also had Probios.
We are keeping the bedding areas clean and practicing handwashing and fly reduction techniques to prevent cross contamination. Like I said, the two calves are completely separated by a large distance, one being in a stall in the barn and the other is in a corral with the cow.
What are your tips and tricks to battle scours? I am wondering if children's immodium or kaopectate could help? Do you have any other helpful remedies that I can put into my regimen? Thank you in advance for your help, my little Aggie is fighting so hard and I don't want to lose her.
