I have been meaning to post but time has gotten away from me. 3 weeks ago Cocoa our little black jersey heifer delievered her 1st calf without any problems. A beautiful fawn girl we named Nalla. I was going to post the good news and about Cocoa's udder. She has such a small udder and TINY teats, didn't bag up a whole lot but wasn't concerned much because she was pasture breed and I didn't know a due date for sure.
But anyhow, Nalla died Saturday and I have no clue why. She has been perfectly healthy and was bouncing around as normal and then got up Saturday morning to find her dead. I am so bummed and depressed about her. She is our 2nd heifer ever born and she was so beautiful! Can anyone possilby guess as to what could of happened. She had no injuries, no bite wounds that I could see, looks like she just layed down to sleep and died. I am wondering birth defect like heart or something.
Cocoa is giving us a gallon per milking and doing pretty well. She has been difficult to tame as a pet like Emma, so she was very stand offish. She would eat treats from your hand but that is it. Never have been able to pet her or get a halter on her. Well after Nalla was born we haltered her and started milking and what a surprise we got. She still doesn't like to be loved on but will stand like a rock to be milked . She has never offered a kick or anything and she willing is coming to be milked. I will try to post pictures of her little udder and teats tonight.
