As some of you may remember I was going to buy a jersey cow last year but it never panned out, that and with buying this farm and remodeling it was a blessing to not have one more thing on my plate. Over the winter we talked a lot about the cow situation and came up with a plan. Plan is now in action... Last weekend we picked up 2 brown Swiss heifers and 2 bulls. 1 heifer and both bulls are on milk replacer and the one small heifer may be sterile due to the fact she is a twin. We took her knowing this and have an agreement with the farmer that if she is not sterile he can buy her back. If on the off chance he gets a bunch of heifers born then he may not want her and I will have 2 brown swiss heifers. (yahoo for me)otherwise she will be in someones freezer in about 18 months. Now next week we are picking up a jersey heifer who is weaned and some more bulls. Got to make some money to keep the girls going. I am hoping about 2 to 4 weeks after that we will be getting a Guernsey heifer and a couple of bulls. I am hoping that by the time they are ready for breeding I will be able to sell a steer a month or so to help support the farm along with all the other things I have going. Now my plan is to keep them all registered and if I have a major influx of heifer that I am not ready to raise and keep I will be raising and selling some of them for family cows after they are confirmed breed. So in a few years I am hoping for some heifers to sell. This is my long term plan. Here is hoping it works. Well I am off the feed the 650 chicks we have, the calves, the cows and the pigs... OH almost forgot the dogs too. Have a excellent day.
