Hi all,
I'm new to the forums, so not sure if this is the right place for my question. Our Jersey cow calved 2 weeks ago, the day before we went away for a week. When we got back I milked her without locking the calf up, and 2 quarters were empty - the calf's favourites obviously. One quarter had bad mastitis last calf, and didn't come into milk this time. The last quarter was absolutely full, and the milk was salty! Tasted like someone had poured a cup of salt in the bucket! After researching, it seemed like the beginnings of mastitis. I have been milking her twice a day to drain that quarter, and then noticed one of the other quarters is always full, and the calf is only drinking from 1 quarter. The milk from the quarter that the calf had before still tastes fine to me, and the salty one is still salty. The cow gets quality meadow/oat hay each day in her paddock, and while milking I keep her still with oaten chaff, pollard, maize, oats, mixed with (as recommended by Pat Coleby - Natural animal husbandry advocate) dolomite, copper, sulphur, yea-sac. I've been mixing this all with about 1/2 a litre of her own salty milk (something I read). Nothing seems to be happening, as far as the mastitis developing, or the salty taste diminishing.
I had some advice (old time cow man) to pat her udder down with kerosene (parrafin) on a rag to clear up mastitis, but I'm not sure how that would go, so haven't tried it yet.
I am getting about 3/4 Litres twice a day from each of the quarters that the calf is not having.
Any help greatly appreciated.
