okay,
Sophie my 9 year old Jersey has been dry since November. Ai'd, but apparently didn't take. She would have been due in April.
She has an awful looking bag. Always has but I bought her not knowing. She regularly had mastitis.
We had decided during the hopeful pregnancy that if she wasn't pregnant she would be hamburger.
Around May 16 she was down and didn't seem to be getting up except to go to the bathroom. She didn't look like she was putting weight on the front leg where the swelling was. She looked much thinner than normal. I had not been outside in 2 days because I had broke my toe. So it's possible she was like that for 2 days. We saw bites on her and between her front legs on one side was swollen. We called the vet and gave her antibiotics and banamine. She also had lots of mucos coming out of her nose and she was breathing shallow.
We gave her the shots 5 in all. She ate molasses water and some feed with molasses. Vit c and probiotics.
The next day she seemed better. Still swollen. Then I noticed all the horse flies and horn flies. I think she was getting ate up with flies. I don't know that it had anything to do with the mucos from the nose. The drugs seemed to take care of that.
She still looks thin for her. I feed her when she comes in. If she's really bad, I take the feed to her. We have enough grass for her.
I checked on her today. She didn't come in during the thunderstorm. She didn't get up when I went out there and her head was hanging very low. Her ears were cold, but it had been raining on her. The horse flies haven't been bad for 2 or 3 days. I brought her feed but she didn't seem to care.
I went to milk to our other cow and saw Sophie get up and go to the bathroom. I'll go back out later and see if she ate.
Could she have a dreadful disease? tuberculosis or something?
Do I need to take her to the vet? I have a stock trailer now so I could take her. I really don't want to spend more money since she's not going to live. Could she survive the trip in a trailer?
Even when the 38 days to butcher time expires from the shots, I'm guessing I wouldn't want to eat her if she has something.
What do I do?
I'm so confused. I save her life to butcher her or I keep her alive for a while and she still dies and I have to bury her.
I really do like her and the whole situation makes me sad even if we had to butcher her.
Help please.
Love,
Audry
