I got contacted today from a retired vet with a herd of Jersey cows. He wanted to know if I was interested in buying his herd. He breeds his cows AI to Genex Bulls.
He has:
1 - 3yo freshened for the first time in Jan - bull calf - been steered
2 - 2yo's due in June and August - One has wry tail?? It's short and her tail set is kinda high
1 - yearling heifer
2 - 300lb heifers
They are all in excellent health and in good condition...even a bit over conditioned. The fresh one, is thinner than the heifers but she is currently nursing all 3 of the 300lb calves and pretty thick despite this.
I tried to talk price with him but he told me to "tell me what they are worth to you and I'll tell you if it's worth it to me." He was going to bring the fresh one to the local sale barn if we didn't want her. Him and his wife travel a lot and they aren't really able to care for them without help especially with all the heifers going to freshen soon. They don't like to impose on people to help.
None have been haltered and although they are friendly, I could not actually get to touch one aside from just them smelling my hand. So they would be some work to train. They are really nice animals and I don't want to cheat him but he will not get much at the local sale barn (beef country) either.
I really don't have a whole lot of funds either but he was only 3 miles away and I couldn't help but go look....torture myself you know. Anybody have ideas on a fair price for any or all??? Anybody want to buy a bred mini-jersey heifer so I could buy his herd??? ;D
ETA: one of the 2 yo's is naturally polled.
