For those who have been here a few years, you may recall the saga of the Stray Bull from the local Sale Barn and his offspring from our dairy herd. For those not familiar. This was a stray heterozygous;y polled black beef bull that escaped the local sale barn and ended up settling all but three of our cow herd. There was some discussion by those more knowledgeable with beef about what his genetics might be. He was not pure Angus since he was heterozygously polled. He produced 8 living heifers (+1 born dead and another twin to a bull). Those heifers have started freshening this year. I thought you might be interested to see how they are shaping up. Especially since we are offering them for sale as family cows (once they are freshened and pass the test).
Marlin calved in at about 21 months old back the end of march. Her dam was a Jersey named Cassandra. Marlin delivered a heifer calf by her 1/2 brother (a son of the stray). Marlin is already sold and will be heading North once she is confirmed bred. Here are some photos of her from the 4th;
This is with appoximately 7-8 hours of milk. She is clean four teated and very calm and easy going. She had 5 novices hand milking her and stood patiently for a good half hour. Her rear udder definitely is lacking. It is low and narrow in the attachment. Her udder hangs forward. It looks like they will all be calving with that similar style of rear udder. Marlin peaked at about 40 pounds a day without being pushed. That's decent for a first calf Jersey heifer, let alone a half beef heifer.
This is Darma. Darma's dam is 3/4 Jersey, 1/4 NR. Both Darma and Marlin go back to the same cow, Acorn. Darma calved just a few weeks ago. Also with a heifer calf by her 1/2 brother. She has two extra functional teats on the rear udder. She is also very calm and easy going. She is available (with or without her heifer calf).
The others are due starting the beginning of June. We shall see how they calve out. So far, we like what we see.
