My 11yo Jersey has had nasal mucous on and off for weeks (mostly off....every week and a half or so, I see clearish/whitish mucous hanging out of her nose for about 1 day). And she also has had a cough that I've started to notice doesn't just happen after she's had her grain at milking. She'll be out on grass and cough sometimes.....several times in a row.
She isn't wheezing, and it doesn't seem like her respirations are labored or quickened. She's very interested in what's going on around her and whether or not her calf is with her. Her head comes up and ears perked to look for her calf & when she sees me.
She's been very skinny for I don't know how long (I just learned about the Body Condition Scoring about a month ago, at which time I figured out she needed better groceries), so I've been feeding her more alfalfa hay and grain as well as the best grass. She seems to be gaining some weight. She definitely has a round belly on both sides, so no slab-sided gut.
She's been stumbling some lately, but I've been attributing that to the fact that her toenail is so long on her left rear foot that she's tripping on it (I've called for an appt. for a hoof trimming). So I don't think the stumbling is a symptom of a disease....but maybe I'm wrong?
She's up and cudding often. I do see her lie down and rest/chew cud sometimes, but I usually see her just standing to cud.
I guess I'm just concerned because today her nasal mucous is more copious than I've seen it plus she coughs sometimes when she's just on pasture. I've been scouring my books and the internet but it doesn't really seem like she has pneumonia because she doesn't act like she feels sick and isn't wheezing. I haven't taken her temp as I don't have an appropriate thermometer to do so. I don't know how long it's been since she had a magnet, but does hardware disease cause nasal mucous? I don't know, what do you all think it is?
Thanks!
Andrea
