I wish we had another calf to put with him, but we can't afford one. The horses are totally ignoring him, and he's so lonesome. Today, Wind (our big white mare) was crashed, sleeping, and Seven was bellowing. (Not sure how Wind was able to sleep through that...) Bandit and Cricket seem to care nothing for poor Seven and have retired to the far end of the cow pasture, which is treed. So lacking any other companionship, Seven walked up to Wind and yelled in her ear, which made her raise her head, then he licked her face! She didn't see the humor in that AT ALL and promptly got up and left.
I just went out a little while ago and he was standing forlornly in the middle of the corral, bawling. Geez.... so I went in and gave him a few scritches, which he really enjoyed, then I got the rubber currycomb and started massaging him all over, top sides, belly, back, neck... he was blissful! But I can't stand out there and fuss over him all day, and when I finally left, he stood at the gate and cried after me. OMG! I can't stand this!
I want to MAKE Bandit or Cricket go stand by the fence and keep him company! HA! Like I could... I was envisioning them relaxing on either side of the divider fence, chewing their cud and "hanging out" together, but the girls just left him. I was also hoping that Horus (the Arab gelding) would want to play with him, since he loves to play so much, but so far, he hasn't. Maybe it's too hot or something.
There's almost 2 more months until Cricket calves, and then it would be another couple of months before her calf would be big enough to put with Seven (the fence won't hold a tiny calf), so that idea's shot, too. Oh, well.
I just wish I could think of some way to give him some company, that didn't cost several hundred dollars. He really needs a bovine friend, I think.
