Miz Annie calved about 10 days ago. Everything went fine. About two days ago, I noticed that one of her eyes was swollen and watery. I figured it was pink eye and gave her some CLO. That typically clears it up no problem. But, by nightfall, both eyes were swollen and puffy. She did not make any fuss about milking (she and I had been having some lessons about kicking!). That really concerned me. The next day she was not doing any better.... she seems worse. Not eating much at all, but drinking some. She eats her grain just fine. The only thing she really likes is apple cider vinegar...this seems to spark her appetite somewhat. Then she eats some hay. She chews her cud, too. She is doing everything she 'ought to', but not really.
My mom thinks that her temp. feels lower than normal. She is not shivering, but she is very unsteady on her feet. Her ears are warm. Her eyes are still swollen and a bit watery. Everything she does seems to be in 'slow motion'. She likes to lay down and doesn't like to get up. She is absolutely stubborn if I try to lead her anywhere.
Her milk has dropped this morning. Not very dramatically, but she's just not eating enough to produce. Would it be good if we dried her off?
It looked like her feet may have been a bit swollen last night, but they looked fine this morning.
She stands holding her head out and a bit higher than normal. Then she turns it slowly to the left as if to look at something and then she turns it slowly forward... a little pause and then she turns it slowly to the right. It seems that she doesn't like to put her head down. She will, but doesn't appear to want to. When she takes a bit of hay, she chews it with her head 'held high'. She doesn't do the head turning constantly, but I have noticed it a couple times now.
Talked with a vet last night... he said that he didn't see anything to worry about if she is still eating and drinking and her milk production hasn't dropped. She wasn't as bad last night as she is this morning, though.
We've given her a vitamin C and garlic drench, but can't really do anything else until we know what is the matter.
I know it's not MF, pneumonia, or ketosis. But what is the matter!? Could it possibly be heat stroke? DA? Tetanus? Retained afterbirth? I'm pretty sure she passed all of it, but maybe she hasn't?
