Well we got thru a stressful 24 hours. The 3 pigs and Sandy(the crippled calf) went to us with Naval Ill. Called the vet when we discovered it and he said to treat him for 3 days. After 3 days he seemed to be over it. Well he wasn't. When it came back it came with a vengeance. After much treatment he wound up with the joints in his front legs ruined. He was able to get up on the right front leg at about 75% and the left front leg wouldn't unbend much past 90 degrees. He had the most spirit of a calf that we ever had. He ran a 104 fever for almost 3 months. But he never quit eating....So we decided that he would never bring any money at a sale so we kept him. He was about 600 lbs when he went. I am waiting to see what he hung out at. He should be really good meat as he has had at least a gallon of milk everyday since he came here.
Below is a picture of the 3 pigs that went. They all were about the same weight when we got them(app. 40 lbs). As you can see that Whitey really out grew the other 2. We had a real time loading the last 2 pigs that went to the butcher. Took like 3 hours and 5 people. We wound up tying a rope to the boar and pulling him up into the trailer and closing the middle gate on him. The sow then went in with a bit of feed. Well we wised up big time this time. On Friday we backed the trailer up to the pen gate raised it as high as the tongue would go and fed the hogs in the trailer. So last night the DH was putting hay on the floor and all 3 of them just sashayed right up into the trailer to see what she was doing.....Bang I slammed the middle gate.....Man it is nice when you have certain things figured out.
On my way home from the butcher my DW called and said that we had a problem......I'm going Oh boy! What now!....She said that as she was feeding Chessie(our newest foster calf. Picture next) she heard a strange noise out of the milking machine(which was hooked up to Shirley our first time lactation Holstein cow). She looked up and milk was coming into the intake muffler of the vacuum pump. She had filled the surge bucket and wasn't thru milking....WOW She is just 3 weeks after calving and we are getting 2 full surge buckets a day out of her and she is also nursing a calf.....
Here are 2 pics of her.
And here is Chessie(because she is a beautiful Chestnut color). I got her this past Thursday at the sale barn. She was split off of her mother who looked to be a Santa Gertrudis.
I sat down after lunch and all but passed out.....LOL
