This has been the most wonderful day .
I got up and went straight out to check the girls, noted from a distance that they were all grazing happily and that both Bloss and Daisy looked up and saw me. Coffee and breakfast, nice and relaxed.
Came out again an hour later and Daisy and Weenie were up near my house, but where's Bloss? She's wandering around in the shallows of the dam and not showing any intention of following the others. I go down and check her out: massive shiny udder, dripping teats, pins as loose as can be. It's all on . I run back for my camera and realise what a beautiful crisp Autumn day it is, not too warm, not too cool.
When I get back she's found a lovely niche next to the dam with soft green grass and poplars surrounding her. We settle in.....
I've been concerned about her udder edema for the last week and even more so yesterday when I noticed it was invading her brisket area. I've been feeding her small amounts of grain soaked in a tea made from fresh dandelion leaves/flowers and raspberry leaves and giving her homeopathic remedies daily, along with dilute phytolacca tincture. It hadn't made much dent in the edema, but I figured it might help the fluid resolve quickly after she calved. Having seen bad edema with two of my heifers last year, I didn't want her udder ruined and would have resorted to drugs if I thought it was heading that way. I was also concerned that she might be a bit tubby.
Here she is yesterday, cooling her poor feet in the dam
This morning, in the birthing suite with brisket edema
Labour begins in earnest
Between contractions I enjoy the scenery
Daisy and Weenie arrive and discuss the possibility of the waters breaking soon....
This one's for Joelle...is this what Scarlette did with her tongue?
Waters broken, feet and tongue out (just after Weenie inadvertently poops all over Blossom )
Head out...
Just one more push says my sister....
Such a clever girl!!!!
Meet Millpostmodern Man, our new bull
Yes, I know we can't just call him Man for short....something will come to mind coz he's just so cute
Mum relaxes for a minute
And finally, a drink
5 gallons of molasses consumed, placenta out at 3pm, edema already subsiding. A perfect day .
Who's next I wonder...
I so love my Bloss . She even waited until she knew I was out of bed - can't beat that ;D
A very happy and relieved Grannie Trina, sigh
