Ash, one of my Shetland ewes finally went into labor last night about 10. By midnight she was crying and straining but nothing was happening, so I went in. The lamb was butt first, legs back. So I got him moved around and out. She loved him a bit and then started back in labor. Soon she was crying, nothing happening. So back in I went. The second lamb had his head tucked back and legs under. I got him all turned around, but he was already dead. We watched her for anther 45 mins(2:30 am by now) and it didn't look like she was still in labor, so we put her in the lambing house and went to bed. This morning there was a little grey ram running around and another black ram dead in the corner still in it's sac. I don't know if it was born dead like the other or just couldn't get out. I wish I'd been there.......
So morning came very early. At 11, Mom called me at work and said Rosebud was in labor. By the time I got home the calf was on the ground. He's a strange grey color you usually see in Charlois crosses. The steers were really bothering Rosebud so I put her and her calf in the barn for about half an hour and then put her back into the corral. I milked about a quart of colostrum at 2 and the calf sucked it right down. Then we milked about a quart and a half at 6:30 and he once again ate it all. He'll sleep all night and we'll feed him again after milking in the morning. Milking a very edemic cow sucks!! None of her teats point in the right direction and I am SO out of practice! ;D
So here are some pics of the new babies...
