I sold Peekaboo and Sally the brahman to a lady teacher I work with. She is a wonderful single lady and has never been married. She is living on family land taking care of her aging mother, it's 150 acres. There have been no cows there since her dad died years ago. She has a brother (USDA inspector that works the local sale barns) that lives 20 miles away that helps her when he can. I told her about my cows being for sale and asked her if she was ready to get back into cattle. I knew she has been wanting to. She decided that was a sign from God and talked to her brother about it. She was hoping he would put $ with hers so t hey could buy my cows.
He said "NO! you don't need cows now, it is not a good time!"
Well, she was very disappointed and probably went to bed crying. She woke up the next morning and said, "But I want those cows!!" So she started thinking about buying by herself. She talked to the tax man and found out she had just enough coming back to buy both Peekaboo and Sally. She was so excited. She told her brother she was getting them by herself and they would be HER cows. He was really surprised, but said he would help her out when he could with the fences etc. They worked a couple of weekends getting the place ready. She told him about my cows some more and she told him why she did not want sale barn cows. She said, "these are Lesli's hand raised cows and are gentle and sweet, I won't be scared of them and they aren't going to be wild cows. If you get sale barn cows you don't know what you are getting, I have all their history info I need, you don't get that with sale barn cows even if you can get some cheap scrubs cheaper than these cows, I just feel these are better. " She mentioned that Peekaboo was half Jersey half brangus, looked all Brangus with a large bag.
He said, "WHAT???" "You did not say she was part Jersey!!"
"Well, yeah, she is part jersey," She sheepishly said.
Her brother said, "Do you know what kind of calves she'll give? She will have the best calves ever raised on all that milk!!"
She stood a little straighter and smiled and said, "well that is what Lesli said--that she would raise pretty calves, she sure has a pretty bull calf right now."
Then he said, "We are going to hope and pray our first calves are heifers, and we are definitely keeping 'em! That makes all the difference!"
Then she says, "WE??? these are MY cows remember?" LOL she got such a big kick out of that.
Well then last Saturday morning she and a young man she hired to come with her and haul them to her place came and got our girls, then they became her girls.
So they get home and left them in the trailer and were going to alter the pens just a bit with some cattle panels. She ran in the house for a bit and said I will be right back to help you with these. While she was in the house the guy was carrying the cattle panel to the pen and it hung on something and he had it up over his head and it slipped and the sharp edge sliced his head open. They ran to the emergency room and he had to get 6 staples on the top of his head. They then went back and turned the cows into the pen (luckily they had plenty of room in the trailer so they were fine). They stayed in the pen the rest of that day and night then she turned them out into ten acres fenced area with the horses. Horses were scared of them and took off. Well then she never saw them (cows) again. They did not come up that evening or the next, or the next. She looked all over the 10 acres (there is some brushy areas) to no avail, so she thought they were in the big open 140 acres. She walked and walked and never saw them. She has been sick about it. She decided that God made everything line up so that she could get them so God would take care of them till she could find them and get them back in. Her brother has been so busy he has not been able to come help her look for them. But a neighbor called her finally on Thursday and said that they had been on his place and he tried to pen them and they ran back through a fence to her ranch again. So she was going to the back 140 acres to find them. There is a tank back there so they had water etc. She was much relieved. SO was I!!
