My husband and I came pulling into the garage after work on Thursday and noticed the cows were in the back pasture. By the time we had gotten out of the car and outside the garage, there were 2 cows that had been up to the pole building that ran into the pasture area by the other cows. The 2 cows looked like something was chasing them...and they were bellowing like crazy. Well my husband had to leave with the tractor and the neighbor to get our pick-up truck that I had managed to put into the ditch down the road with all our ice. I noticed I didn't have any keys to the house, so I decided to slide into the pole barn and feed sweet feed to the cows like we normally do. I got my buckets of sweet feed and headed to the feed bunks, and all the momma's had shown up and the calves were coming at a run. I couldn't figure out what was wrong with all the cows. They were acting so excited. Well when my husband got back, he checked the 2 hay rings and the little piggy's had eaten all their hay (even though they had half the bales left in each ring that morning). So my guess is that those 2 cows that ran frantically to the pasture for the other cows were announcing that I was there for their treats! It just tickled me.
And today...we have a dog in a kennel in the pole building (open to outside) where I get my sweet feed. I have to take him out on a leash since he tends to chase the cows...and I shut this ag gate that's inside the pole building to keep the cows out of the small hay bales and our pen areas...but don't chain it since none of the cows usually bother with it. (He's actually my daughter's boyfriend's dog that we've somehow had to take, but he gets depressed when he's out in the wet weather) Well I took this dog out to the area around our house so he can run for about 30 minutes with the other German Shepherd. Well after they've run enough I put the other dog back in her kennel and put a leash on this one...and we're unchaining the gate to get into the cattle area and all of a sudden there are cows/calves pouring out of the pole building. Well I thought this was weird so I'm wondering what I will find in the barn...apparently one of the mothers (Hyacinth...she's such a little pig) decides to go through the gate that they usually don't bother with and she's licking the spout of the big red grain train and noseying around everything. She didn't even care that I was there, so I put the dog in the kennel and she calmly walks back out the gate. I think those other cows heard me opening the other gate and decided they didn't want to get caught where they shouldn't be.
