Well, she's really the first baby that I've raised (from 2 weeks old) to now be going to visit the bull.
Here she is in July of '08.
Here she is last June.
Poppy, my little Angus heifer, whom I have grown so attached to, was Belle's last foster calf. She was/is quite the stinker and has such personality.
So Poppy is over visiting the Dexter bull. Malcolm is a handsome fella, a reddish dun, I guess you'd say. However, we're not too sure he's tall enough! I know, where there's a will, there's a way, but man, he may have to take advantage of the slope in their pen. LOL Poor guy. If he can't get the job done, Patti will turn her Kerry bull in with Poppy. He's got a little more leg and would have no trouble.
And I was really proud of her. Since it was so muddy here as it thawed out, we couldn't get the trailer close to the barn. So I had to rely on her halter training, and it's been a while since we did much of anything with it. But she walked out like a pro, and after only a minute of hesitation, stepped up into the trailer for me. And at Patti's, she got out very nicely, looked around and proceeded very mannerly into the pen. I was very proud of her. I did feel bad, though, as we drove away, she came to the fence line and looked as if to say, "Hey, wait, that's my ride."
I'm really excited about this because it is my first baby to take this step. Although there have been others born on my place before her, I've sold them and haven't gone through this experience with them. So hopefully, she'll come home pregnant and will soon be round enough she can't squeeze her already round self into the calf creep any longer!
