Now, other than the fact I just want her because I want her . . .
;D ;D ;D
please give me some opinions. I don't have pics of her, but I did go see her today. She is located in NE OHIO and they want $1,000 for her.
Jenny is a two year old registered jersey who calved in March without difficulty. She was AI'd in September and is believed to be bred back - no signs of heat. The family who is selling her bought her as a heifer and they hand milk her twice a day while she is tied to a post. She is giving 1 gallon per day. They just put her calf back on her for a bit - he had been sold but got sick and they took him back to mend with Mama and she took him right back and he is recovering. (They aren't milking these couple of weeks so that the calf can have the milk) She doesn't have a very large udder and her teats seem to be a nice length about 2 inches from my guesstimate. While we were there she was very stand offish and kept trying to maneuver herself and her calf away from us. Very alert and would move around while I tried to look at her udder. My hubby thinks she was being aggressive because she was putting her head down and bobbing the way our nasty highlander does when he tried to reach out to her over the fence. I didn't look at it as aggression so much as she was saying, "I don't know you and I need to watch out for my baby." Her condition looks good, she had a nice healthy winter coat coming in. She is naturally polled. Being newbies my spouse is concerned that we will bring her home and she won't be friendly etc . . .I think it is something that we would work out over time. The owners said she has never been aggressive with them, just if she is unhappy she tries to move away.
Any thoughts? Should we be concerned about milk volume? Is there any issue with pulling the calf back off her right before we get her? The owners are moving soon. I asked if I could come milk with them if we decide to get her and they said absolutely. All 4 quarters are intact. We are currently in the spot where I am trying to get blood to biotrack my shorthorn to determine if she is bred or not and I really want some milk (I'm whining a little). What do you think of the price?
Any thoughts would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Joyce
