HI Everyone! I am a newbie on this board and a newbie to dairy cows. I grew up with horses and goats and my husband grew up with beef cows and sheep, but neither of us have much experience with milk cows. I have been doing a ton of research and this site is a wonderful wealth of knowledge.
I am currently looking for a milk cow for my husband and I. I want to have milk to drink and make cheese and also maybe share the milk with a couple of calves as well. I just love cows and always have, I think they are so beautiful. Here is my delima: I am not sure what kind of cow I should get. Right now my options are this: a good friend has a little 3 month old angus/jersey cross heifer that she would sell me for a good price once she is weaned. Right now the little girl is pretty wild, but my friend will be halter breaking her at some point. My other option is a purebred Jersey that is older and is bred and in milk right now. We have a sort of 'cow broker' down the road from us that goes to dairies a few states away and gets cows from them and sells them here (Idaho). He seems like a really nice guy and right now he has about 10 different cows to choose from. What do you all think would be the best situation for a first time milker? I really want to start milking right away, but an angus/jersey cross would be nice as well.
I have to admit I am a bit intimidated about the whole milking thing, but am very excited about having my own milk cow. I take wonderful care of my animals (currently have horses, goats and one mini cow and dogs and cats), but I just want to make sure I do the right thing here for the cow and my husband and I. Thanks in advance!!
