April has been sick for over a month, and is getting much worse every day. We have no idea what she has, but she has a vet appointment tomorrow at 4:15 if I can keep her alive until then.
So here is the story.
April is a 3 year old Jersey cow who freshen August 27 with no problems. we took her calf to bottle raise, and saw her pass her afterbirth. Two days later, she had orange discharge that looked and smelled like egg yolk, and a lump near her udder. The vet came over and gave her oxitosin, and said that the lump was not filled with blood, and was most likely just edema because she had bad udder edema. She gave 5 galens a day after the first 2 days.
Five days after freshening, April got bad ketosis. During this time, April got free choice grain, several B Complex and Dex shots, and my vet moved to Florida, Saturday morning was the first milk without ketones,
Saturday night, April had a temperature of 104 so I gave her banamine and Dex, Next morning, We called our vet, and decided that she had pneumonia because she was breathing heavy, I gave her and Nuflor, her fever went up to 105 and would not respond to Banamine so she got more Dex.
Monday she was up to 105.5 and my vet told me to give her Baytril, Dex. and Banamine.
Tuesday her fever is up to 106.3 and my vet decides that it is a viras and I just need to wait it out. I brought the fever down with Banamine, Dex, all my Dyparone and a water hose. A Different Vet tells me that I need to use the same anibiotic for at least three days before deciding it doesn't work.
Wendsdy, I start her on Bio Mycin and Tylan 200 because I can get them withount a vet, and in goats, they work much better together that alone. I used the last of my Banamine on the fever,
Thursday and Friday, No fever, Bio Mycin and Tylan 200.
Saturday I am to afraid of the reaction ( picks coming soon) to give her any antibiotics. I give her a B Complex to make her eat something,
Sunday No fever, but she was resting her head in the dirt while she whas standing up, and her ears where drooping I gave her B Complex
Monday 105 Dex after giving her the dex, we were told not to give her any more unless she was at death's door,
Tuesday in stall with fan, normal temp in morning 106 at 2, and she was holding her head in the dirt again. Dex and an hour under the water hose, no improvement. B Complex and no fever or symptoms within five minutes . Large on milk vein (picks coming soon), My vet says to worm her, so I use Cydecten Pour on.
Today 104 at milking, I went inside to get a B shot and while I was looking for shoes, I saw her out the window lying on her side panting hard with her tung all the way out. I ran out and took her temp, it was 106.7 I put a hose on her and when she got up, I gave her the B, and Dex, an hour and forty five minutes under the hose, and her temperature was back normal. At Pm milking, she was 105 but I couldn't give her any more meds so I hosed her down.
The three things that have been suggested to me and not yet proven wrong are 1- a thymine defecency, 2- barberpole worms, and 3- some kind of worms that make bumps on the cow in the spring, then explode in the fall and put worms in the intestines,
The last was my vet's, and I don't know what he is talking about.
Do any of y'all have suggestions on what she has? Doese anyone know of another way to bring down feaver? Like I said above, we have a vet's apointmet tomarow.
Thanks Madeleine
