So, here's my little herb garden after a few months. I had to add some 10-10-10 fertilizer to it, when I realized the potting soil I used must have been really nutrient-less; my herbs weren't growing, and they were turning funny colors. The fertilizer did the trick, and all my herbs returned to a lush green and started growing like crazy.
Oh, and if it looks like my garden went to the beach, it's because I used some wood shavings left over from our chick pen as mulch. Works great, though I have caught a few mushrooms trying to sprout after the rain.
So far, no weeds! The grass around it is kind of encroaching, thanks to the chicken wire fence I put around it to keep the chickens out. but so far I haven't had any actual weeds in the garden itself. The only thing that failed so far was the tri-colored sage, but it was the furthest gone before I got the fertilizer on it and I think it was just a tad too late. I'll replant next year.
Nothing like fresh herbs on pizza! YUM!

So, here's my herb garden a year after I first planted it. The oregano is going crazy!! I harvested a ton of it just to keep it from overpowering everything else! The rosemary, interestingly enough, didn't survive the winter - all three plants dead. Which is fine, we don't use it often and I harvested enough last year to last us for a long time. Also, the Italian oregano didn't come back in - don't know why, when the Greek variety did splendid.
Basil has to be replanted, but I've never had much luck with that reseeding itself. Also need to replant the italian parsley, though the curled variety came back better than last year. So, I'm down to: sage, thyme, parsley, basil, oregano and chives. Not bad, I really only lost the plants we don't use much (the Russian tarragon also bit the dust).
In the pics, you can see where I started to cut back the oregano (I did that so you can have a perspective on how tall it's gotten!). Please please PLEASE ignore the hugely tall grass around the herb garden mowing has been rather low on our priority list as of late. The bucket you see was full to the top by the time I was done, and for reference my sink is pretty deep!
