Hello, my name is Lesli, my family and I (DH=Richard, and two sons 15 and 10) bought our first milk cow (jersey guernsey cross) back in March, and she just freshened Monday- Oct 24 after delivering a little bull calf. He was sired by a Charolais. Well our trouble is our cow was a pasture cow, but she is more or less gentle, supposedly never been milked, but she allowed us to always feed her in the milking stall, and rub all over her udders etc. She let my husband milk her till he got about a half gallon in the bucket then she kicked the bucket and totally drenched my husband, then she realized that was the way to play the game, so hubby tied her leg to post to finish. But she was not having any fun and we want to get her to relax and let this all happen. We were wondering two things:
1. We are very interested in a device called the "kick stop" can anyone tell us how it works and if it is reliable and anything else you think we should know about this device.,
2. How do we get her to stop crapping and urinating while we are milking???
She still has a bit of attitude and occasionally shakes her head at us. She has tipped horns and has never hurt any one with them, and seems to know better than to really follow through with her threat, just wants us to think she will. We are not foolish enough to fully trust her. I know you all probably think it was stupid for us to get an untrained cow, but we decided to take the risk, and that is all that was available in our area.
Any advice to newbies would be appreciated!
I think it is cool that their is a forum for keeping a family cow!!
