Well, I've now milked three different goat herds and tasted good goat milk. I decided I could probably use the milk from one Sannan goat and so I bought me a nice one with two kids. Right away (after about four days) the milk started tasting strange, kind of thick and salty. Of course I thought mastitus, so I called Hoegger's help line and talked to Anne. She thought it probably was mastitus also and advised medication of "Today" as well as other suggestions. I got a couple of the mastitus test sheets and tried to determine which side was the problem. The yellow dots turned green. Since the Vet's office didn't tell me what color it should turn and there was no instructions( I think I paid 2.70 for each strip and I should have probably gotten the box for that price. I'm sure the instructions would have been on it.) So I assumed it was indeed mastitus. So I administered the Today and milked and waited to use the milk till the indicated time. Still the milk tastes yucky. Not really salty but more like coconut milk. This won't do for me or my picky milk drinkers. I've called all the goat experts in my area I know and no one knows what could be the problem, other than her food intake. I'm feeding her exactly what the other goats I've milked had which is 3 way with molasses and alfalfa hay. Does anyone have any suggestions. I live really far out now and have to come to town to use the Internet. Perhaps someone could email me directly if they have any suggestions. I'm about ready to give up.
