How exciting, Ole Jessie has not long since finished delivering twin heifers ;D ;D
She'd just had the first one when I arrived over to her paddock this morning but didn't expel the afterbirth within an hour so I thought there would be another to come
Once I got all the other cows and calves milked, fed and my cleaning up finished I did an internal on Jessie. I could feel that the second calf was still in an unbroken bag, upside down, breech and bigger but was well up in the birth canal.
My sheep farming neighbour was working right next door so I asked him to come have a look. I encouraged Jessie to push while Tony pulled and we had her out within about 2 minutes.
Ole Jessie is so laid back about it all and is still lying down. I'll give her an hour or so to get up before I start getting concerned. She drunk down 2 bottles of Calol no problem at all and a few buckets of molasses laced warm water.
The nasal vaccination for calf scours that Farmwife told me about last week is not available in NZ My Vet hadn't even heard of it but was keen to learn more so I gave him details about the manufacturer.
Sounds silly but the Vet recommended I give the newborn/s this powerful brew of colostrum called Start Up. It comes in powdered form to which you ad warm water. So, as added insurance against scours I've given the first one her two litres and will do the same with the second calf shortly.
Best I go feast my eyes on those two little girls again and encourage the old girl to get up if she isn't already
Will post pics later!!
Tnaks guys ;D Here they are!! Once again it's thanks to AnnB and James Herriot for giving me the inspiration and confidence to perform an internal ;D
I must say I felt like quite the Vet, sprawled flat out on the ground up to my armpits in cow
Just yesterday I'd been eyeing up the old girl and came to the conclusion that I'd need a step ladder if the need to perform an internal arose whilst she was standing!!
