The Casper-Natrona County Health Department warned people Tuesday of the risks of consuming raw, unprocessed dairy products.
Though it is illegal to sell raw milk in most states, including Wyoming, more than 10 people have fallen ill in southwestern Colorado since March 30 from drinking raw milk obtained from cows at a Colorado dairy.
The Colorado residents became infected with campylobacter, a bacteria that causes two to three days of diarrhea, stomach cramping and vomiting, but is rarely fatal.
Bob Harrington, director of the county health department, said large scale sales of raw milk do not occur in Wyoming because of strict enforcement of laws, but he said he wanted to remind people it is not a good idea to drink raw milk in case they encounter it.
In the past, Harrington said he has heard of some sales of raw milk and other dairy products in Wyoming but none recently and none in Natrona County.
Raw milk has not been pasteurized, a process in which it is heated rapidly to kill bacteria, like campylobacter, and cooled rapidly to protect flavor, Harrington said.
"It's just dirty," Harrington said about raw milk.
"A lot of people think raw milk is healthier, that pasteurization takes away all the nutrients, but that is just not true," he said. "Pasteurization does not take away the vitamins and nutrients found naturally in milk. It makes us safer."
People can also catch a variety of other illnesses from raw milk, including staph infections, strep, brucellosis and tuberculosis, Harrington said.
He recommends people drink only commercial dairy products.
Wyoming records about 40 to 50 cases of campylobacter every year, but people usually catch the bacteria from unprocessed poultry or contaminated water.
This was my reply to that artical.. Not sure if they well print it or not..
I have to strongly disagree with the raw milk report that was in the paper 4-14-2009. I grew up on raw milk and still have my own milk cows to this day.
The article states that the good stuff is not taken out of pasteurized milk. It is, and the flavor is not retained in the pasteurization process. Sugar is added to pasteurized milk to give it flavor. Also most people can not process pasteurized milk due to the chemical break down in the pasteurization and homogenization process. Skim milk and 2% milk in the stores is actually the reject milk with powdered milk added to it. Whole milk is loaded with sugar antibiotics and other unnatural stuff..
As for Raw Milk passing on diseases such as TB and Brucellosis, this is false. Cows are given Vaccines required by the FDA to prevent the spread of these diseases. And cross contamination in a good clean milking parlor is almost unheard of these days. If the facilities are clean and the equipment is properly cleaned you have virtually no chance of contamination. Also, any good milker would be smart enough to wash the cow’s teats before milking her. Washing the cow also prevents her from getting mastitis in her udders. Mastitis is an infection in the mammary gland. Most women that have breast feed their own babies have dealt with this at least once and it is very painful.
Large dairies are allowed a certain amount of mastitis in their milk and they are also allowed to milk sick cows and cows on antibiotics and hormones to increase the milk production. The family cow does not have hormones given to her and she is much healthier than the large dairy cow. If she is sick and has to be treated it is usually with natural remedies unless circumstances deem she needs antibiotics. If this happens her milk is not used for the family due to the fact that antibiotics can pass through the milk. All antibiotics for cattle have a withdrawal time for milk or slaughter animals.. This time is put on for a reason, so why are large dairies allowed to use the cows during this set time?
Studies also show that children given raw milk have less cases of flu, tooth decay, allergies and skin problems and less chance of asthma. If Raw Milk was so bad for you then how did all those people survive before pasteurization and chemicals?
