I have a cow who has had mastitis for a LONG time now... at first I just thought that she had alot of edema. This was her first calf, she started flaking in her milk immediately after freshening. All 4 quarters are involved. She freshened last August.
She was flaking on & off in her milk for months on end...& I was using circulation enhancing udder creams to control it. We were share-milking, Thought maybe the calf was being too rough, weaned him at about 6 months. Then the mastitis started flaring up more & more, started having the calf nurse at night again to help control things.
Finally we had to wean him completely, Mastitis got worse.
Decided to get serious and did 8 rounds of Today, that didn't work, got a prescription from my Vet for Naxcel. We did a 5 day course of IM Naxcel. That didn't work.
Tried Peroxide infusions per Pat Coleby, That wasn't working, and after a 6 days or so I felt that the peroxide was harming the tissue inside, plus I wasn't getting huge results, no significant progress but keeping things in check... A friend said to do Colloidal silver Infusions, tried that 5 days & it didn't seem to hurt or help...
I have done 6 cloves of garlic a day for several weeks in a row, I have drenched her with Dolomite & Copper sulphate & vitamin C...
I have tried irrigating the udder with Saline (per an organic dairyman I spoke to) but that didn't work...
I have tried fasting her in conjunction with garlic/Vitamin C drenches...
I have spent countless hours massaging her udder with peppermint udder cream... and Cayenne udder cream... and varioius essential oils mixed in... and Grapefriut seed extract.... And alternating HOT/COLD compresses....all in conjunction with the aforesaid treatments...
I bought a new calf from a local dairy a few weeks ago. He is helping me keep her milked out during the day, and that is helping alot.
My Vet gave me some hypertonic Saline solution to I.V. her with, to make her thirsty... then she was supposed to drink alot of water, (which she did do)... and then she was supposed to make alot of milk to help flush out the Masitis. But I can't keep giving her an IV everyday, and she still is sick. Now that I have done the IV's on her she is afraid of me.
I am currently drenching her with Apple Cider Vinegar twice a day (per D.C. Jarvis) plus she is getting Kelp, I am looking into getting Lugol's Iodine...
And, currently I am also infusing into the udder Tea tree oil/Oregano oil (in a carrier oil), plus massaging Uddermint in, working out all the puss.
I do this twice a day, and have the calf on her during the day to keep her emptied out, seperating them at night so that I can get a good letdown when I milk in the morning... The calf nurses while I strip out her hardest quarter, which he avoids.
(but he does nurse on it during the day, I can tell. He is hungry because her production is down)
The Oregano Oil/Tea Tree Oil infusions are the only thing that seem to be making a significant difference, but it has to be strong enough or it won't work. Right now I am doing a blend (half & half tea tree/Oregano) of 1/4 essential oils, and 3/4 carrier oil...
After the calf nurses & I strip out, I then put 20 mL of my oil blend up in there, & massage it around vigorously. All 4 quarters...
Then I am able to extract large amounts of Puss... (comparatively)
After I work all that out then I infuse another 20 or 30 mL of my oils into the Udder & work it all in with Uddermint cream...this batch stays in. This stuff is resolving the hardened areas, albeit slowly.
Wondering what would happen if I put the essential oils in there straight!!! Seems like the stronger I make it, the faster the hardening resolves.
I know there are people out there just gasping at this scenario....
Well, wow, what am I to do? She is going to die anyway if I do nothing, and I watched and waited long enough to know that I didn't cause this with all my fiddling around. And she didn't get it from laying in dirty bedding either!
Whenever I quit doing her SPA treatments, she begins to worsen immediately.
SO... my question IS: Is there some other antibiotic that might be a better choice after the Today & Naxcel have failed?
I sent a culture in to the Veterinary Diagnostic Lab at OSU, and it came back inconclusive.
Please Please help me, I am about ready to shoot my cow. this is taking over my whole life!
I have been wondering if I gave her Banamine, if that would reduce the swelling/hardening long enough for me to work out the infection??? I have areas that I can massage out the hardness, but then it hardens right back up again.
She is not acting sick.
Her udder is hard, each quarter varies in hardness with the front Left quarter being pretty much in the bowling ball category, and the rest falling in line behind that. There is no heat in the udder, she is eating & drinking & nursing her calf. He is always hungry, though!
She is getting Kelp, which she devours, I am putting out a half gallon a day and she eats it all. Redmond Mineral Salts/Sea Solids, Redmond Conditioner, Azomite plus a salt lick that has extra Selinium.... apple Cider vinegar drenches... Plenty of clean fresh water... I was giving dolomite/Copper Sulphate/Kelp mix but she wouldn't eat the Kelp with that other stuff in it.
She is getting NO grain, never did give her grain at all... as much Alfala as she wants, and more recently plenty of fresh grass in the pasture as it becomes available.
