I am plotting-and I knew this would be just the place to get some "moral support".
I have Pezra, the Dutch Belted cow-she's 6 and bred and in milk. I also have Violet, a bred Jersey heifer, due in July. Pezra has lately turned into the devil cow who does not want to be milked (in large part due to the fact that Violet nurses Pez and Pez has become a mom in a big way.) Pezra is also HUGE compared to a Jersey and is not very friendly. She tolerates me. Throw into all that the fact that we have to walk them about 100 yards to pasture everyday and that we live on site at a camp and conference center.
I have a friend who *may be* selling her super duper, friendly, sweet Jersey cow. I want this cow. But I can in no way have three cows milking. I just don't have the market for that sorta milk. And at least, I'll have two cows milking, which would be just about right. But, being that we live at a camp, I'm not sure I can have three cows. Two is tolerable to the powers that be. Three might be pushing it. So-my grand plan:
Move Pezra to my parents' farm to be a nurse cow. She can raise the two Jerseys' calves when they calve and her own. And add a few holstein steers after the others wean. My parents also have a herd of Scottish Highland cattle, and lots of space. Then we could sell any heifers as future milk cows and have our own beef from the steers. AND I'd have two Jerseys here at camp who are smaller and more suited to possibly having children trying to milk them. I love Pez, she's a good solid cow, but she's just not lovable like a Jersey. I think she'd be happy as a nurse cow. I'd be happy to have her as a nurse cow. Thoughts?
Thank you!
Angie
