Wow...well, we have been keeping the boys and the girls in seperate pens to prevent anything illicit. Then, last week we decided to go ahead and seperate the two boys and put our permanent boar in with the gilts. We're trying to feed up the one meat boar (aka "One Nut"...enough said) who has a fast approaching date with our freezer, without bulking up our breeding boar..."Ike (of Hurricane Ike fame) Mmorpg" (designated our pig family's last name...pronounced "more pig"...a pun on pig breeding AND my kids' enjoyment of "Massively Multiplayer Online Role Playing Games" on the PC).
We thought we'd seen our two gilts, Peaches and Brandy, get all wild and crazy with heat about 2 weeks ago, so we thought we could go ahead and put Ike in with the girls and they'd get bred in a week or two, giving us piglets at the end of June. We thought that would be perfect timing, as we are supposed to go to a major reenactment of the Battle of Brice's Crossroads for the middle weekend in June, 12-14.
Well, for the last two days, ALL our pigs have been breaking out of their electric fencing...something they have NEVER done before! Yesterday, one of the gilts was way off down the hill at the Cow Barn, and lo and behold, our Gr. Pyr. saw her out of place and gently herded her back across the farm to her pen! What a great dog!!! Anyway...we were trying to get everyone sorted back into their proper pens when we noticed that "One Nut" didn't want to leave one of the gilts, at all. We finally had to herd Ike and the girls into One Nut's pen, and leave One Nut in their's. It worked. However, no sooner did we do so than Ike was mounting Brandy's head and had that old ocean motion going! If you haven't seen a boar "do his thing", let me tell you...it's...um...very educational! (it's the origin of the vulgar term "screwing". My DS swears he'll never used that term again! Halleluia!). Anyway, Brandy was standing for him, where Peaches wasn't game AT ALL! Eventually, Brandy got out from under the misguided guy and got everything...um...properly situated...and bingo...we're now expecting piglets in 3 months, 3 weeks and 3 days (at 3 am...says Walter Jeffries!). That's June 16, exactly two DAYS after we'll get back from the re-enactment. Wow, talk about timing! Here's hoping for Brandy to go to FULL TERM with healthy big litter!
P.S. After all the courting whoopla between Ike and Brandy, my DD was surprised with how short the actual "deed" was...her comment being...is that ALL it takes to get her pregnant? Yup. (hmmm...maybe more teenagers should see this kinda thing, and maybe we wouldn't have so many teen pregnancies?! Ya think? :.
