I tried to do a search on this forum, but the search requires at least 4 letters...
I am new to goats and just bought my first Oberhasli doe. She is due for her 2nd freshening in the spring and had a kid that was weaning. I have only had her a few days and love her, she's very sweet. I am milking her TAD and she's very patient. She was drying up, but has consistently given a bit more each time, got 1 quart yesterday. She's my only and first goat. I made sure that she was CAE and CL negative. The breeder had gotten them tested and the vet had called and said the herd was negative.
This doe is lonely and she had one other Oberhasli, so I am going to go buy a 2nd one today. The breeder just called this morning and said she just got notice from her vet that my doe *did* test positive for CAE. There is a mistake somewhere. Either the first report, or this notice today, one is incorrect. The odd thing is that her kid is negative? She has a call into the vet and is waiting for a return call.
I took the day off work to drive down and pick up this second doe. They lived together before I bought the first one only days ago. Is there a risk to the 2nd doe bringing her home to live with the 1st? The breeder said no, it is only transmitted by milk. And that if it turns out the 1st doe is truly positive, she will take her back.
I have so many questions now. But my first question is whether I can still go pick up the 2nd without risk to her. Then I'll wait to hear from the vet on where the mistake was made to determine what I will do with the 1st one, whether to keep her or not.
Thank you for any help or advice!
