...with HortonPepper. The wind was blowing out of the northwest yesterday when we went out to do chores in the morning. Our barndoor opens to the west...and Horton was shivering. His ears were cool and his muzzle cold, but I still had a lot of hope for him because he had a lot of energy and was sucking well. He got a good meal of milk from Buttercup and licked a couple of handfuls of sweet 16 off my hands, trying to suck on my fingers.
We have him penned in a corner of the barn and had a windbreak up, but the wind was so fierce and it was only 28 degrees, so I think it was just a bit too much. We put a blanket on him right away and hung a heat lamp above him. While I finished milking, Frank brought up 2 more sheets of cardboard and we blocked the rest of the side of Horton's pen. It is still open at the front, near Buttercup's stanchion.
We have a half door on the barn, but don't want to keep it shut, as we want BC to have access to protection from the weather. So we put a sheet of cardboard up over the top half of the doorway, cutting a slightly higher opening at one end so BC can come and go. She bellered in protest the entire time we were in the barn doing the work - I don't think she liked us changing her house yet again.
I had to go in the pen with Horton to get him to stay under the light for awhile, and went and checked on him mid afternoon. At that point, he was lying down under the light, sleeping comfortably. Last night when we did chores, his ears were nicely warm, as was his muzzle. He seemed very happy again.
